What you will learn

In this Artist Course, you will learn how to use a variety of aperture rings - not limited to the commonly used circles – to produce a range of exciting and unusual slumped forms. Amanda will guide you through the complexities of slumping through all the varying shapes to ensure you learn how to tackle the unique issues that can arise from every form. Of course, Amanda will also give you advice and inspiration for creating exquisite blanks to slump into these moulds in the first place – and will also share information on the relevant studio health and safety, the best set-ups, colour blends, mark making, shaping, forming, firing schedules and so much more.

This course is a thorough and easy-to-follow guide that will lead you to create new forms from squares, rectangles and ovals. You will build a collection of works through thoughtful mark-making, delicate shapes, and varying heights of slumps.

Amanda has prerecorded the course content so you can access it at your own pace and revisit it as often as you wish. An accompanying community page allows you to share your progress and ask Amanda any further questions to demystify the process.

Skill Level:

Intermediate, forming and slumping glass experience is required.

The Square and Rectangle Moulds can be used in a standard Hobby fuser kiln. The Ellipse Mould will fit in a Cub Fuser kiln.

The Artist Course gives you lifetime access to the techniques and demonstrations. The Artist Course is all pre-recorded videos therefore these are not live but you can access them any time you like on any device, and your access will not expire.

What similarities are there between the Artist Course and the Live Online Masterclass?

There are still materials lists, notes and a community page which will be monitored by Glass School and the Artist. Instead of receiving tuition during live sessions, you can now access a class immediately, as all the tuition is prerecorded.

Amanda Simmons

Amanda makes kilnformed glass objects, playing with gravity in the kiln. Manipulating mass, heat, colour and time, she creates complex, elusive work that has intense colour and pattern which reacts to the light it is placed in. She uses opaque glass powders to construct her work because of its varying translucency as the form elongates in the kiln, then finishes the kiln fired pieces using many coldworking processes to shape and mark the glass including sandblasting, hand lapping and diamond point and wheel engraving.

Amanda graduated from Central St Martin’s School of Art & Design in London with Distinction studying Postgraduate Certificate in Glass & Architecture, before relocating to Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland in 2005. She has exhibited in many high profile national and international exhibitions.
