What you will learn

During this three week course students will be introduced to the use of bullseye glass rods for lampworking. Lampworking is a glassmaking technique that involves using a hot oxy-fuel torch at over 1200°c to melt and sculpt glass on a small scale. It is often considered a smaller version of glassblowing.

Using this magical process, students will be guided through the process of creating component parts, and familiarising themselves with the unique properties of bullseye glass rods. You will develop the skills to make a range of botanical forms and insects. You will be surprised at just how detailed and life like these will be.

Each week will commence with a demonstration of a technique. Students can practise the technique between classes and will have the opportunity to engage in group conversations where they can ask Laura questions about the process, or even ideas of how to develop what they have learned into other works. Laura is passionate about making glass learning personalised, and giving students the skills and confidence to explore their creative ideas through this magical medium.

Skill Level:

This class will be suitable for beginners to intermediate levels.
It will be useful if you already have your own lampworking set up so that you can practise what has been covered in the classes.
You should be already familiar and comfortable with switching on and off the lampworking torch, the hazards and risks involved with working with this hot process. Health and safety will only be covered briefly at the start of the first lesson.

Course Summary:

The use of bullseye glass rods for lampworking- how its properties differ from other lampworking glass.
How to use a range of hand tools to create a variety of forms and textures.
How to control their torch to get the versatility needed to create detailed and lifelike glass sculptures.
Develop the lampworking skills to create a range of botanical forms and insects.
Learn the foundational techniques of assembly which can be applied to an endless amount of lampworked creations beyond the duration of the course.

Workshop Outcomes:

To start, students will practise making simple leaf and petal formations, in preparation for the assembly method. In the first session, a warm up activity will also be included which links traditional bead making, with what will be learned over the course.
In the second and third sessions students will learn how to assemble the prepared component parts into a variety of botanical forms including: five petal flowers such as forget-me-not/ periwinkle, lavender/ wheat, grass blades and seaweed,
You will also learn how to build upon a central body to create different insects and creatures such as dragonflies, butterflies and beetles.

How it works

The course is made up of live and interactive online sessions using the Zoom platform. You will find the zoom link via the week chapters in the navigation panel.
The artist will give a step-by-step tutorial with demonstrations, and you will have ample opportunity to ask them questions during the live class
Each week they will demonstrate a technique for you to try between sessions
A member of the Glass School team will also be in the Zoom class to assist you

A materials list is provided in the course navigation panel, so you can purchase what you need to create your pieces during the course. You don’t need absolutely everything on this list to be successful, the artist will
discuss different ways to reach our technical goals.

We believe that this is the best way to get the very most from the course, but if this doesn’t suit you that’s fine: - If you can’t get to your studio, you can still learn the techniques and benefit from the teacher's extensive knowledge without making the pieces during the course itself. This is a live online masterclass, but in case a student experiences issues with internet connection during the live class, a recording of each live session will be available to view until four weeks after the final session. This cannot be downloaded or shared and is only available for this limited time. By participating you agree to be recorded for this purpose.

What to prepare

• You will need a computer, tablet, or phone with a camera and microphone in order to join the online classroom. If you are unfamiliar with using Zoom then please take some time to look at our guide, available in the navigation panel.
• You should have a reliable internet connection, fast enough to make video calls or stream videos
• Please read the Student Participation Agreement
• Ensure that you have checked the materials list and purchased any materials you may require
• A pen and paper to take any notes.
• We restrict the class size to 25 people
• We teach using Bullseye Glass (CoE90)

Laura Quinn

Laura Quinn is a multi-award-winning maker of innovative contemporary glass sculpture. In 2015 she graduated from the National College of Art and Design. She achieved her MA from Arts University Plymouth in 2019. Quinn works as the Glass Technical Tutor at the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, where she teaches the next generation of glass artists and hones her craft.

In recent years her work has received international recognition having been selected for high profile exhibitions including Collect Open 2022 and the British Glass Biennale. Most recently Laura was awarded funding from the highly prestigious Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust.
