Masterclass: Spatial Imagery in Glass - Helen Slater Stokes at Morley College London - 21st - 24th July 2026 - 9:30AM - 4:30PM

Over four days, Helen will guide you through Spatial Imagery in Glass, exploring multiple approaches to developing imagery and translating it into kiln-formed glass. This masterclass is designed to expand both technical skills and creative thinking, offering participants a rich toolkit for incorporating imagery into their own practice.

You will explore a wide range of techniques, including glass sgraffito frit drawing, paper-cut stencil enamel printing, photo silkscreen enamel printing, and personalised decal transfers.

Helen will also provide in-depth instruction on screen-printing equipment and processes, including choosing appropriate silkscreens for different image types, correct squeegee handling, and working with liquid underglaze enamels.

Prior to the masterclass, participants will have the opportunity to prepare imagery for digital decals, which will then be incorporated into kiln-formed glass blocks during the course. Additional areas of focus include efficient kiln packing for tiles and blocks, embedding sgraffito frit drawings into larger works, and polishing finished pieces using minimal equipment.

This intensive masterclass offers a unique opportunity to develop technically advanced glasswork within a supportive and inspiring learning environment.

A member of the Glass School team will be on hand for the duration of the masterclass as well as teaching assistant and Senior Lecturer at Morley College, Maria Zulueta.

Glass cutting experience is beneficial.

Masterclass Summary:
Summary of what will be covered during the masterclass:

• Creating paper-cut print stencils for glass.
• Choosing the right silkscreen for different image types.
• Setting up screens and working with a squeegee correctly.       
• Exploring a variety of print processes using liquid underglaze enamels.
• Use printing clamps to achieve accurate image registration.
• Designing imagery for digital photo silkscreens or digital decals.
• Packing kilns efficiently to create perfect tiles and blocks.
• Applying waterslide decal transfers to kiln-formed glass.
• Making sgraffito frit drawings and embedding them into larger works.
• Using tools and techniques, including Ceraboard and minimal equipment, to polish and finish pieces.

Masterclass Outcomes:

• 10x10cm test tiles (approx 4 each) working with Papercut Stencil Print, Photo Silkscreen print, and Waterslide decals.
• A block cast with internal imagery (approx. 15 x 10 x 3cm)
• A Sgraffito Frit Drawing (approx. A5).

What this masterclass includes:

• Glass materials, tools, equipment, and firings are included. Works will be completed on the last day so that you can take them with you. Packaging materials will be provided.
• Tea, coffee, drinks, and biscuits will be provided during the masterclass.
• Lunch is not included, but there are lots of shops, cafes and restaurants near the college

Please note: Digital decals are ordered and printed in advance; enrolments after 15th June will not be able to order personal decals but will have access to a selection of existing designs.
